Tara Pipella has been continuously listed in the Canadian Legal Lexpert® Directory as a leading practitioner in Alberta in the area of Personal Injury litigation. Tara carries on the family tradition of her late father, Edward S. Pipella, Q.C., practicing exclusively in the area of personal injury law and acting exclusively for Plaintiffs, successfully negotiating settlements and arguing cases that ensure proper compensation for her clients’ catastrophic injuries.
Tara received her Bachelor of Communications from the University of Calgary in 1989. Thereafter, she completed her Bachelor of Education in 1991 and taught with the Calgary Board of Education for one year. Tara then pursued her Bachelor of Laws (Honours with Distinction) from the University of Wales in Cardiff in 1997.
Pipella Law is pleased to announce that Derek Allchurch has joined the team at Pipella Law. Derek is a graduate of the University of Alberta, Faculty of Law. After articling in Edmonton and getting admitted to the Alberta Bar, he returned home to Calgary in 1995. From 1995 to present, Derek has worked as a Plaintiff’s personal injury lawyer at several Calgary law firms.Derek is excited about his move to Pipella Law in January 2015, as he has personally witnessed Pipella Law’s commitment to excellence while representing injured Plaintiffs alongside Pipella Law for many years.
Patricia M. Gutek
Patricia (Patti) Gutek was raised in Calgary and attended St. Francis High School. She obtained both her Bachelor of Commerce (1999) and Law degrees (2003) at the University of Calgary, with time spent as a visiting student at McGill University, the University of Miami and the Queen’s University Centre for International Study in the U.K. Upon graduation, she was awarded the Grant McKibben Prize for the student who epitomizes the energy and spirit of the Calgary law school community. Patti articled with Edward S. Pipella, Q.C. and was called to the Bar in November 2004.
Kimber R. Pipella
Following in the footsteps of her father and sister, Kimber Pipella, has joined Pipella Law with aspirations of carrying on the family tradition of working as a personal injury litigator. Kimber received her Bachelor of Arts degree majoring in Leisure, Tourism and Society at the University of Calgary in 1993. As part of her program, she embarked on various field studies throughout the Caribbean and the West Indies where she studied the physical geography and the impact of tourism in the areas of the Bahamas, Puerto Rico, Guadeloupe, Dominica, Martinique, St. Lucia and St. Vincent. In addition, she studied environmental, religious and gender issues in Egypt, Israel, Greece and Turkey, and completed a semester at the University of Laval in the French for Non-Francophones program in Quebec City. Following graduation, Kimber was offered a one-year fellowship at Walt Disney World in Florida as a ‘Canadian Ambassador’. Her exposure to media at Disney piqued her interest in journalism. In 1997, she completed her Honour’s Diploma in Cinema, Television, Stage and Radio with a major in Broadcast News at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology.
Dan Thorn obtained his B.A. in English from the University of Calgary. He attended law school in Halifax, graduating from Dalhousie University with his Juris Doctorate in Law in 2012.
Dan articled at Blain Legal, formerly Nikitiuk and Blain, between 2012 and 2013. Most recently, he practiced at CKM Law from 2017 to 2018, with an emphasis on personal injury law.
Dan spends his free time weightlifting, hiking and running. He recently volunteered at the “Run for Water” run in Calgary. He is also an avid golfer and writes short stories. He has published a number of short stories in online journals and magazines, including a story in Transition magazine.
Alyshea Surani completed her Juris Doctor from the University of Calgary in 2017. Prior to law school, she graduated with a Bachelor of Science (Dean’s List) from the University of Calgary in 2012.
Alyshea has considerable experience helping various physicians in their practices and has extensive experience reading and writing medical reports, an area in which she has worked for the past 8 years.
Alyshea volunteers with the World Partnership Walk, an initiative of Aga Khan Foundation Canada. She also enjoys music, dancing and travel during her time off.
